IRVING, TEXAS — May 8, 2006
Rudy Mesa, of Maxwell, Texas, an international police liaison officer working for DynCorp International in Iraq, was killed today near Rustamiyah, Iraq, when the U.S. military convoy in which he was riding was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Mr. Mesa was based in Rustamiyah, near Baghdad, and assigned to the Civilian Police Advisory Training Team (CPATT), the component of the U.S. military Multinational Security Transition Command – Iraq (MNSTC-I) responsible for the U.S.-led effort to train and equip the 135,000-member Iraqi police service. DynCorp International recruits, trains, equips, and supports the 500-member U.S. contingent of trainers through a contract with the U.S. Department of State.
One U.S. soldier was killed in the attack and three U.S. soldiers were wounded.
Mr. Mesa, 56, had worked for DynCorp International in Iraq since March 31. He had been a law-enforcement officer with the San Marcos (Texas) Police Department for eleven years. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970 and 1974-1992.
