U.S. Police Advisor Killed in Afghanistan

IRVING, TEXAS — May 18, 2006

Ronald Zimmerman of Glenwood, Indiana, an international police mentor-advisor serving with DynCorp International in Afghanistan, was killed today when the convoy in which he was traveling was ambushed near Islam Qala in the province of Herat, Afghanistan. Five company employees were injured in the attack.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time. The convoy was attacked by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) and arms fire. Mr. Zimmerman, 37, was part of a team that was training and advising police in the Herat area, near the border with Iran and Turkmenistan. He had been in Afghanistan since early April 2006.

Mr. Zimmerman served with the Brookville (Indiana) Police Department from 1998-2004, rising to the rank of sergeant and holding the positions of patrol officer and field training officer. He served one year with the International Police Mission in Kosovo before joining DynCorp International.

“Ron Zimmerman was an experienced, dedicated, and courageous police officer who made a lasting contribution to establishing the rule of law in two countries,” said DynCorp International CEO Stephen J. Cannon. “Our entire company shares his family’s loss and is with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Police mentor-advisors are under the direction of the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan (CSTC-A), which is responsible for promoting stability and security in Afghanistan through the creation of a respected and competent police force dedicated to the rule of law. DynCorp International recruits, trains, equips, and supports a 352-member U.S. contingent of trainers, advisors and mentors through a contract with the United States Department of State.
